Our teeth are designed to be straight and well aligned. Straight teeth are very high in chewing efficiency and look great. The teeth erupt crookedly when there is too much or too less space in the dental arch. This occurs due to improper growth of the supporting bone. Dental braces are orthodontic appliances that move misaligned teeth in a guided direction. At our dental offices in Norwalk and Lakewood, we offer orthodontic treatment to improve oral health of our patients. Our dental professional plans the treatment based on the needs of patients. Dental braces from our office have created some healthy and great-looking smiles in the Norwalk, Long Beach CA and other surrounding communities.
Our natural teeth work efficiently when they are straight and properly aligned. Sometimes the supporting bone may overgrow or under grow. This causes the natural teeth to erupt crookedly. Habits like thumb sucking and tongue thrust can also lead to orthodontic problems. The result is malocclusion or a bad bite. This is a condition where the upper and lower teeth do not align properly in a bite. Malocclusion can have a number of impacts on oral health and esthetics of the smile. Following are some of the problems that can arise from a bad bite.
The dentist performs thorough oral examination during the first consultation. X-rays may be taken to check the occlusion. Based on the complexity of the problem, our dentist will decide whether dental braces are required. We also make sure to check for tooth decay and other problems that may come in the way of orthodontic treatment.
The dentist uses retractors to keep the teeth visible to help with placement of the braces. The teeth are completely dried and polished before fixing the brackets over them. Adhesives are used to fix the brackets over teeth. Wires are inserted in the brackets in tension mode. This helps the unit pull the teeth in planned direction. The dentist tightens the wire periodically and checks the progress of treatment. The orthodontic treatment may take about 18 months to 3 years depending on the complexity of the condition. On successful completion, the dentist may provide retainer to ensure that the teeth do not come back to previous position.
