Our dentition is designed to chew food efficiently and maintain the shape of facial structure. When a tooth is lost, there is an imbalance in dentition and the chewing efficiency reduces. There can be more workload on other teeth. As a result, the patient has to put in more effort to chew hard food items. Dental prostheses are developed to address biting and chewing problems and to improve oral health. Dental bridges are among the good options to replace missing tooth. The restoration finely fills the gap in the dentition and improves chewing efficiency. At our dental offices in Norwalk and Lakewood, dental bridge restoration is one of the dental services we offer. Our dental care has helped in improving oral health of many patients from the city and surrounding communities.
There can be many reasons for teeth loss but the aftereffect is the same. The ability to bite and chew hard food items reduces. The patient may lose confidence when there are many teeth missing. The gap in the dentition may cause the nearby teeth to shift positions leading to orthodontic problems. Teeth loss causes resorption of supporting bone structure. There may be changes in the facial structure because of bone resorption when there are many teeth missing.
A dental bridge has one or two anchoring crowns and false tooth/teeth to replace the lost tooth/teeth. Natural teeth or dental implants can support the anchoring crowns. The teeth should be prepared to create space for placing anchoring crowns. Teeth preparation involves removal of some portion of top layers. This is done with the help of local anesthesia. Once the teeth are prepared, our dentist takes impressions and gets the dental bridge fabricated in the lab. Temporaries are placed over the prepared teeth until the final bridge is ready to be fixed in place. On successful completion of the process and proper oral care, the dental bridge may last for 10 years or more.
